Often called the “King of Balladeers” and the “Pavarotti of Soul,” Peabo Bryson is a legendary vocalist whose career has spanned over five decades. Known for his rich, operatic voice, he holds the unique distinction of being the first artist in music history to have separate recordings top four different charts: R&B, Pop, Contemporary Jazz, and Classical Crossover.
Tonight’s performance is a special occasion, as we welcome a fellow Carolinian. Born and raised just down the road in Greenville, South Carolina, Bryson’s musical journey began right here in the South. From his early days singing in local Greenville groups like Al Freeman & The Upsetters to his recent honors—including a mural at Greenville’s Unity Park and a street named in his honor—his roots in the Upstate remain the foundation of his world-class sound.
A two-time Grammy and Academy Award winner, Bryson is world-renowned for his iconic Disney collaborations, including “Beauty and the Beast” with Celine Dion and “A Whole New World” with Regina Belle.
He dominated the charts in the 1970s and 80s with hits such as “Feel the Fire,” “I’m So Into You,” and the chart-topping “Can You Stop the Rain.”
Beyond his solo success, he is celebrated for his sophisticated collaborations with legends like Roberta Flack (“Tonight, I Celebrate My Love”) and Natalie Cole.
With 21 studio albums and over 25 Top 40 singles to his credit, Bryson’s technical prowess remains unmatched. Whether performing intimate “Quiet Storm” ballads or grand cinematic themes, his music continues to define the art of the romantic song.
