An evening with Sean Mason offers a brilliant look into the future of the jazz tradition. His musical style is defined by a deep-pocket, blues-and-gospel-drenched warmth seamlessly blended with a sharp, contemporary edge. Rejecting the divide between the traditional and the avant-garde, Mason’s performances deliver music that is infectious, sophisticated, and deeply communal. Known for his “chameleonic” touch at the keys, he invites the audience into a shared, real-time musical dialogue.

Sean Mason is one of the most compelling young pianists and composers tracking a rapid ascent in the jazz world today. Born and raised right here in Charlotte, North Carolina, his musical roots were forged in the local church and nurtured by JazzArts Charlotte, where he won the inaugural Loonis McGlohon Young Jazz Artist Competition at age 17.
His exceptional ear and technical command caught the attention of jazz titan Branford Marsalis, a pivotal mentorship that led Mason to study at The Juilliard School under Wynton Marsalis. Once in New York, he quickly became a first-call sideman and anchored a legendary late-night trio residency at Smalls Jazz Club.
A Bessie and Bistro Award winner, Mason’s career is defined by high-profile collaborations. He earned a Grammy nomination alongside vocal powerhouse Catherine Russell for their duo album My Ideal, and partnered with acclaimed spoken-word artist Mahogany L. Browne for the visceral project CHROME VALLEY.
Beyond the jazz bandstand, Mason’s versatility has left a mark on Hollywood and Broadway. He was the featured pianist for the soundtrack of Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, worked on the films Rustin and Tulsa Burning, and held musical roles in landmark Broadway productions like Hadestown and The Phantom of the Opera. He also served as Musical Director for the National Jazz Museum in Harlem’s “When You Wish Upon a Star” national tour.
