Rising star Selwyn Birchwood is an award-winning bluesman who isn’t just carrying on the blues tradition—he’s reshaping it. Carving out a singular sound he dubs “Electric Swamp Funkin’ Blues,” Birchwood delivers an intoxicating cocktail of deep blues, psychedelic rock, booty-shaking funk, and sweet Southern soul. Whether he is wielding a blistering electric guitar or a searing lap steel, Birchwood performs with the fire-and-brimstone fervor of a revival tent preacher, backed by the pulsating baritone sax of Regi Oliver.
While his 2023 album Exorcist pushed the boundaries of modern blues with bold social commentary and fearless creativity, his most recent August 2024 release, Old School, showcases his incredible range. Featuring an acoustic-leaning setup with upright bass and grand piano, Old School strips the music down to its raw, traditional roots, highlighted by a legendary collaboration with Blues Hall of Famer Bobby Rush.
Birchwood’s journey to the forefront of the genre began in Orlando, sparked by the influence of Jimi Hendrix and the experience of seeing Buddy Guy live. At just 19 years old, he began a life-changing mentorship under blues veteran Sonny Rhodes, who schooled him in both the artistry and the business of the industry. This dual education led Birchwood to earn an MBA from the University of Tampa before launching his own band in 2010.
Since winning the 2013 International Blues Challenge, his career has been a meteoric rise: his debut Don’t Call No Ambulance won major industry awards, and his 2021 release Living In A Burning House hit #1 on the Living Blues Radio Chart.
Standing 6’3” and often performing barefoot, Birchwood is a powerhouse of charisma and musical originality, proving with every soulful, high-energy set that he is the real deal.
