James “PJ” Spraggins, smooth jazz drummer, composer, and producer from Birmingham, Alabama, has been developing his presence and signature style for over two decades.
PJ has toured and performed with Grammy-winning R&B vocalist Peabo Bryson and funk trombone virtuoso Jeff Bradshaw, and provides the backbeat for a host of highly acclaimed artists from jazz guitarist Eric Essix to chart-topping jazz flutist Kim Scott.
Spraggins launched his solo career in 2006 with debut album The Light of Day (2006), showcasing his refreshing blend of simple, catchy melodies and soothing rhythms. This album produced the viral hit “Nocturnal Drive,” exceeding 8 million streams. His subsequent album releases, Pure Logic (2012), Time to Heal (2015), and Stick It Out (2023) continue to earn recognition. Single “Grace & Mercy” was nominated for Song of the Year at the inaugural Jazz Music Awards in 2022 and single “High Five” reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Smooth Jazz chart.
