Join us for a monthly exploration of smooth jazz. Hand-selected by the ‘extraordinary’ John Dillard, this series shines a light on rising talent ready to take the spotlight on your list of favorites. It’s Sunday Smooth: immerse yourself in a curated world of lush melodies and in-the-pocket groove. This month, we welcome NC-native billboard-charting saxophonist Jason Jackson.
Jason Jackson, a Billboard Top 20 smooth jazz saxophonist, has rapidly become a mainstay on the contemporary jazz charts. Following the success of 2021 debut “Movin’ On”, he transitioned from military musician to solo artist with a string of popular releases that set the perfect balance of groove and smooth.
Raised in Wilmington, NC, Jackson’s musical journey began early under the tutelage of legendary James Brown saxophonist Leroy Harper Jr. While still in high school, he secured a coveted gig at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, SC, sharing the stage with renowned acts like Brian McKnight, Morris Day and The Time, KC and The Sunshine Band, and Michael McDonald.
In 2011, Jackson joined the Navy as a musician, performing for audiences worldwide, including in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Australia. This international exposure solidified his belief in music as “the universal language” and culminated in his recognition with the prestigious Colonel Finley R. Hamilton Outstanding Military Musician Award.
Following his military service in early 2021, Jackson collaborated with contemporary jazz star Adam Hawley to craft his debut EP, “Movin’ On.” Produced by Hawley, the EP features acclaimed musicians Julian Vaughn and Tim Bowman.
Since then, Jackson has ascended the Billboard charts with new releases earning multiple Top 40 singles and collaborating with legends like Rick Braun and Eric Marienthal. He continues his upward trajectory with latest 2025 retro-soul hit, “Drop The Needle.”
