5th & York has emerged as one of the premier smooth jazz bands to come out of the Southeast. With influences ranging from the Yellowjackets and Fourplay to the great funk bands of the ’70s and ’80s, the Charlotte-based ensemble offers audiences an unforgettable, high-energy live experience.
The band has shared the stage with national recording artists such as Earth, Wind & Fire, Chicago, Anthony Hamilton, and Gerald Levert. When asked what sets them apart, saxophonist Derwin Friday explains, “We understand what working professionals want to hear because we are working professionals ourselves.” Their passion for music creates a sophisticated yet accessible sound, effortlessly bridging smooth jazz and classic R&B.
