Forged from his Memphis gospel roots, Kirk Whalum’s big, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his: soulful, passionate, and stirring. A Grammy Award winner and 12-time nominee, he is the legendary saxophonist behind Whitney Houston’s iconic, mega-hit solo on “I Will Always Love You.”
Building on s storied legacy, Kirk’s latest release, Epic Cool, landed in the Top 20 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart and spawned multiple Top 5 Smooth Jazz singles, including “Bah-De-Yah!” and “Pillow Talk.”
First discovered at a Houston rooftop club by jazz pianist Bob James, Kirk stepped out as a soloist with five successful early albums—including his first #1, Cache, and the Grammy-nominated collaboration Joined at the Hip. He went on to become an in-demand collaborator for Barbra Streisand, Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross, Quincy Jones, and Larry Carlton.
Honored with a brass note on the Memphis Walk of Fame and a star on the Nashville Walk of Fame, Kirk’s musical excellence has earned him two Stellar Awards, three Dove Award nominations, and an NAACP Image Award nomination.
