Since their formation, Ranky Tanky has celebrated a historic run of “firsts” for South Carolina’s Gullah community. They reached a defining milestone at the 2019 GRAMMY Awards, taking home Best Regional Roots Album for their sophomore release, Good Time. The album—which also topped the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart—is a masterful blend of generations-old Sea Island songs and original compositions rooted in the West African traditions of the Southeastern United States.

Ranky Tanky (a Gullah phrase for “get funky”) are five lifelong friends from Charleston, South Carolina, who have established themselves as passionate global ambassadors for their local culture. While four of the members—Quentin Baxter, Kevin Hamilton, Clay Ross, and Charlton Singleton—first began playing together as a jazz quartet in the late 1990s, the addition of powerhouse vocalist Quiana Parler (a celebrated American Idol alumna) completed the quintet’s signature sound. Together, they faithfully preserve the traditions originated by African Americans in the coastal South, bringing them to the global stage through appearances on The Today Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and President Biden’s inauguration event.
