This series offers you an immersive journey through jazz history, by experiencing legendary albums performed live, front-to-back. Each performance captures the energy and improvisational spirit of an iconic album that defined the evolution of jazz.
THE ALBUM
Recorded in a single evening on December 9, 1964, John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme is widely regarded as a masterpiece and a defining monument of spiritual jazz and modal avant-garde. Composed as a four-part suite—”Acknowledgement,” “Resolution,” “Pursuance,” and “Psalm”, it was created as a prayer and expression of gratitude for overcoming addiction and undergoing a spiritual awakening.
Musically, the suite moves far beyond traditional jazz structures. Anchored by his classic quartet—McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums—Coltrane uses extended modal solos, chant-like motifs, and hypnotic, polyrhythmic intensity to create a feeling of divine devotion. Garrison’s famous four-note bassline in “Acknowledgement” echoes the phrase “a love supreme,” which Coltrane chants directly over the groove, while the final movement, “Psalm,” is a musical recitation of an actual poem written in the album’s liner notes.
Beyond its musical brilliance, A Love Supreme transformed jazz from nightclub entertainment into sacred art. It expanded the harmonic and emotional boundaries of post-bop, heavily influencing free jazz, rock, and modern classical music. Decades after its creation, it remains one of the most powerful artistic statements on faith, redemption, and human transcendence ever recorded.

Tim Scott Jr. is a Buffalo-born, Charlotte-based drummer, producer, and entrepreneur with nearly two decades of industry experience. A dynamic performer, he has toured with The Foreign Exchange and shared stages with icons like Branford Marsalis, Robert Glasper, and Fantasia. Expanding into event production, Tim has produced shows for top-tier acts and co-founded Communities in Concert. Today, he co-owns an entertainment company dedicated to artist management, marketing, tour direction, and community advocacy.
