This series offers you an immersive journey through jazz history, by experiencing legendary albums performed live, front-to-back. Each performance captures the energy and improvisational spirit of an iconic album that defined the evolution of jazz.
THE ALBUM
Released in 1957, ‘Round About Midnight was Miles Davis’s landmark debut for Columbia Records, signaling his arrival as a mainstream icon and setting a gold standard for hard bop. Fresh off a acclaimed performance of Thelonious Monk’s title track at the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival, Davis recorded with what would become his legendary First Great Quintet: saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones.
Musically, the album balances tense, blues-infused swing with understated elegance. Davis’s Harmon-muted trumpet creates a dark, intimate lead tone that contrasts sharply with Coltrane’s explosive, searching saxophone solos. Timeless renditions of standards like “Bye Bye Blackbird,” “Dear Old Stockholm,” and the iconic title track “‘Round Midnight”—featuring Dizzy Gillespie’s dramatic intro and cadence—demonstrate the group’s mastery of dynamic contrast and spatial awareness.
Historically, ‘Round About Midnight bridge the gap between bebop’s frenetic energy and the sophisticated, spacious cool jazz Davis would pioneer later in the decade. It established Davis as a dominant cultural force, launched John Coltrane into national prominence, and remains one of the defining ensemble recordings in jazz history.

Tim Scott Jr. is a Buffalo-born, Charlotte-based drummer, producer, and entrepreneur with nearly two decades of industry experience. A dynamic performer, he has toured with The Foreign Exchange and shared stages with icons like Branford Marsalis, Robert Glasper, and Fantasia. Expanding into event production, Tim has produced shows for top-tier acts and co-founded Communities in Concert. Today, he co-owns an entertainment company dedicated to artist management, marketing, tour direction, and community advocacy.
