Al Strong’s Act IV: Love Stronger Album Release Show

Al Strong is an award-winning trumpet player, composer, recording artist and educator. Whether melting hearts at a whisper volume or being gracefully dynamic when the music calls for more intensity, his natural ability to strike listeners at their core is unmatched. Middle C is thrilled to host his Act IV: Love Stronger Album Release Show on Friday, November 18 at 7pm and 9:15pm!

Al Strong

Featured Artist of the Week: Al Strong

Al Strong is an award-winning trumpet player, composer, recording artist and educator. A cultural innovator, he is the co-founder of the Art of Cool Project, which spawned the original Art of Cool Music Festival in Durham, N.C. and the start of Cool youth summer camp.

Strong is lauded for his distinctively unique sound. Whether melting hearts at a whisper volume or being gracefully dynamic when the music calls for more intensity, his natural ability to strike listeners at their core is unmatched. His 2016 debut album, LoveStrong Vol. 1, a 10-song mix of original music and jazz classics, garnered national and international attention for its “blues-inflicted, Southern church-happy” sound.

Strong’s discipline and dedication to his craft has forged a prominent career that includes performances with music legends such as Aretha Franklin, The Count Basie Orchestra, Dwele, Eric Roberson, and The Hamiltones. He’s also served as music director for hip-hop pioneer Rakim and has headlined shows at the Blue Note Jazz Festival, Winter Jazz Fest, and Blues Alley. Known for his creative ability to seamlessly re-imagine existing works like Thelonious Monk’s “Blue Monk” and the classic “My Favorite Things,” Strong aims to challenge the boundaries of music while connecting with his audiences.

He continues this mission of storytelling with his latest musical offering “Love Stronger”, which includes an array of beautifully introspective original compositions and Strong’s heartfelt arrangement of the Negro National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Music enthusiasts can find “Love Stronger” for purchase and streaming on all digital media outlets.

Friends of Middle C Jazz,

We find it hard to believe that it’s been three years already, but we are thrilled to celebrate our third anniversary this weekend at Middle C Jazz. What an amazing couple of years it has been! Reaching another milestone in our club’s history is the direct result of our great team at the Club, the phenomenal music on our stage, and YOU. We would not be here without your support. Many of you have been with us from the beginning, and for that we will always be grateful.

We are excited to commemorate our Third Anniversary this week with a few of our very favorites, Noel Freidline and Maria Howell and special guest Karen Briggs, celebrating iconic artists including Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Ray Charles and Elton John. Noel and Maria performed at our Grand Opening and our pas two anniversaries, so it is only fitting that they will provide the music to ring in our fourth year. We hope you will join us!

Our thanks again for your support and for your love of music. We look forward to seeing you this weekend, throughout the holidays and in 2023!

With gratitude,

Featured Artist of the Week: The Boneshakers

Now in 2022, as The Boneshakers celebrate the 25th anniversary of their first release, a new energy and excitement has emerged.

Producer John Wooler, who originally signed The Boneshakers in 1997, connected Randy and the incredible Jenny Langer- a powerhouse singer who was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame (NYC and VA) at the age of 28 and won the 2020 Int’l Blues Challenge for Best Self-Produced Album. What started as a few tracks for her project quickly morphed in a new album with The Boneshakers featuring no-holds-barred funk, blues, and rock that marries the sounds and spirits of Detroit Rock City, Memphis, and Mussel Shoals.

Produced by Wooler, it is back to the original vision of The Boneshakers fiery sound, with the vocal dynamo Jenny Langer behind the mic and original musicians from “The Book Of Spells” Sergio Gonzales (Drums), Nathan Brown (Bass), Jon Gilutin (Keys), The Texacali Horns (Joe Sublett, Mark Pender, and Randy’s former band mate from Was (Not Was) Sir Harry Bowens on vocals.

The new album One Foot In the Groove was released on Take It To The Bridge Records on Sept 30th. According to Blues Matters Magazine, “This is an album that every blues, funk, and soul music lover needs in their collection.”
