GRAMMY-WINNING JAZZ FUSION
“…a perfectly combustible electric-acoustic outfit whose smart, often challenging and unpredictable compositions draw from fusion, postbop and contemporary jazz.“— Jazz Times
Yellowjackets stand as a testament to longevity in the ever-evolving jazz landscape. Formed in the late 1970s as the backing band for guitarist Robben Ford, the group quickly found its own voice, evolving into a celebrated ensemble known for its innovative blend of jazz, R&B, and pop.
The band’s name, surprisingly, lacks a deep origin story. According to keyboardist Russell Ferrante, “Yellowjackets” simply resonated with its implied energy and “sting.” This seemingly arbitrary choice belies the band’s enduring impact.
Over four decades, Yellowjackets have consistently pushed the boundaries of jazz. Their music, characterized by intricate interplay and a seamless fusion of styles, has captivated audiences worldwide. From their early explorations in jazz-funk to their more recent ventures into chamber jazz, the band has continually demonstrated a willingness to experiment and evolve.
This dedication to artistic growth has garnered significant recognition. Yellowjackets have received numerous Grammy nominations and awards, solidifying their place as one of the most influential jazz ensembles of their time.
The current lineup boasts a blend of experience and youthful energy. Founding member Russell Ferrante continues to lead the charge, joined by drummer Will Kennedy, saxophonist Bob Mintzer, and bassist Dane Alderson. This dynamic group continues to perform and record, sharing their music with audiences around the globe.
As they enter their fifth decade, their recent 2023 Grammy nomination shows that Yellowjackets remain a vital force in contemporary jazz, inspiring new generations of musicians and reminding us of the enduring power of creativity and collaboration.
