Acclaimed pianist, composer and humanitarian Keiko Matsui’s transcendent and haunting melodies have long sought to build bridges. Her sonic cultural exchange has reached the hearts and minds of fans throughout the world and has allowed the pianist to work alongside icons Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Hugh Masekela and Bob James. “I would like my music to be a conduit for peace, kindness, love and light,” shares the petite, soft-spoken, yet commanding pianist. She adds, “My recording Echo is my attempt to capture all of these elements into the vibration of sound.” On February 22, 2019 Keiko Matsui will release her 28th recording as leader, Echo, which she co-produced with Grammy nominated producer Bud Harner. A master storyteller, Matsui crafts exquisite compositions replete with lush harmonies and global rhythms to create timeless musical anthems. Like iconic musicians Miles Davis and Shirley Horn, Keiko is also a master at utilizing space in her music to create a backdrop of drama, tension and sheer beauty.

Middle C will be filled with the sounds of PFunk, Prince, Rick James, James Brown, and other timeless funk legends. Throw on your favorite pair of bell bottoms and join us for House of Funk: Curated by Stefan Kallander on Wednesday, March 8 at 7pm. The band features some of Charlotte’s finest musicians: Courtney Gibson, Jesse Lamar Williams, Zach Wheeler, Braxton Bateman, Simon George, and Stefan Kallander, in addition to monthly sit ins and features of other stunning artists from the deep well of Charlotte Funk.

Take a ride with me through Van Morrison’s collection of Blues, Soul and Rock ballads all blended in a Celtic Stew of uplifting beats, heart- felt searching for understanding, soul touching melodies, and jazzy compilations that deliver you back to a rustic Irish Pub somewhere in the countryside of Ireland where the beer, Irish whiskey and music flow warmly together until the “wee hours of the mornin”. We’re excited to bring Sy Smith to Middle C for a for four shows on Friday, March 17 and Saturday, March 18 at 7pm and 9:15pm! Sy Smith has long since solidified her place in the world of underground soul music (she’s often called “the hardest working woman in underground soul”). This Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter and producer helped cultivate the nu-soul scene in that city more than 10 years ago, a scene which now easily boasts some of the most progressive artists of that genre to date.
