IN THE STRAIGHTAHEAD JAZZ SCENE

Wednesday, July 30

July, 2025 –

The vibrant jazz landscape of the Carolinas boasts incredible talent, exemplified by Chrishawn Darby, a prodigious drummer, percussionist, composer, and dedicated private instructor. Originally hailing from Orangeburg, South Carolina, Darby is a strong presence in the regional jazz community, bringing his refined artistry and passion for straightahead jazz to stages and educational institutions alike.

Darby’s musical journey began early, at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities in 2013. He continued his jazz studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), and completed his Master’s degree at North Carolina Central University in 2024, demonstrating a commitment to musical excellence.

Through that journey, he boasts an impressive list of mentors, which includes industry stalwarts like Danny Boozer, Thomas Taylor, Jerome Jennings, Lewis Nash, and Matt Wilson. These experiences have shaped Darby into a versatile and nuanced musician, capable of contributing to a wide range of ensembles.

Indeed, Darby’s performance credits read like a “who’s who” of current jazz presence. He has shared the stage with acclaimed artists such as Janinah Burnett, the legendary Glenn Miller Orchestra, the soulful Shana Tucker, the dynamic Brian Horton, the esteemed Camel City Jazz Orchestra, the swinging Mint Julep Jazz Band, Keenan McKenzie and the Riffers, and respected educators and performers Steve Haines and Chad Eby, among many others. These diverse collaborations highlight his adaptability and the broad appeal of his rhythmic sensibility.

With his straightahead jazz quartet, Chrishawn Darby truly shines, offering audiences a journey into the heart of jazz tradition. A perfect way to showcase a drummer at heart, straightahead jazz is characterized by its emphasis on acoustic instruments, swinging rhythms, walking basslines, and a strong focus on improvisation within established harmonic structures. It represents an authentic expression of jazz, a direct lineage from its golden eras, and the timeless tradition of its constant evolution. Darby’s quartet embraces this tradition with precision and flair.

When he’s not electrifying audiences with his quartet or other collaborations, he is actively shaping the next generation of musicians as the current Professor of Percussion at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, and through his virtual and in-person private drum lessons

Lovell Bradford presents the Chrishawn Darby Quartet at Middle C Jazz on Wednesday, July 30th.
