Spotlight: Genre-Defining Vocalist Alyson Williams
SOUL MUSIC HALL OF FAMER
Performances: Friday, July 3
Some artists define a moment. Alyson Williams has defined decades. With a vocal style that weaves soul, jazz, and gospel into what audiences describe as a “hauntingly pure” experience, Williams has built a career that defies easy categorization, and that’s exactly what makes her so compelling. Her sound carries the elegance of her upbringing: the daughter of jazz trumpeter Bobby Booker, she was immersed in music from childhood and later trained with the prestigious Dance Theatre of Harlem, giving her artistry a disciplined, classical foundation that never lost its warmth.
Before Williams ever stepped into her own spotlight, she was the secret ingredient in everyone else’s. She became one of the most sought-after session singers of her era, lending her voice to legends like Melba Moore and Evelyn “Champagne” King. In the world of early hip-hop, she was the quintessential “hook girl,” collaborating extensively with Kurtis Blow at a time when rap was still finding its footing. That behind-the-scenes mastery eventually gave way to a historic moment in 1989, when she became the first female R&B artist signed to Russell Simmons’ powerhouse Def Jam label. This distinction earned her the title “First Lady of Def Jam.” Her debut album Raw went Gold and spent over a year on the Billboard charts, announcing her arrival in a way that was impossible to ignore.
What sets Williams apart from so many of her contemporaries is that she never stopped building. She transitioned into acting, starring in more than a dozen Broadway and stage productions, including The Wiz and Menopause the Musical, proving her performance chops extended well beyond the recording studio. She expanded again into radio, connecting with audiences as the host of Love Notes with Alyson Williams on WHCR-FM, and into entrepreneurship and philanthropy, all while continuing to collaborate with jazz heavyweights like Christian McBride and Kirk Whalum. In 2020, her enduring impact was formally recognized with her induction into the Soul Music Hall of Fame. Whether on stage, on air, or in the studio, Alyson Williams remains exactly what she has always been: a celebration of love, light, and music in its most authentic form.
