Spotlight: Larry Braggs, Modern-day Motown
Performance Friday, October 3rd
His musical journey began early. At age 4, Braggs got his first taste of performing, standing on a table and singing with his grandmother. In the 4th grade, his teachers recognized music as a key motivator for him. This passion continued through college, where a vocal scholarship was the reason he pursued a degree and a key contributor to his success. A classically trained tenor, Braggs attributes his discipline and artistry to the guidance of family and teachers who believed in him early on.
Larry’s initial break is a testament to his drive. Working three jobs straight out of college, he heard about an opening in Tower of Power. With only three days to learn 25 songs, his approach demonstrated his commitment. “I made up my mind that I was the singer for Tower of Power,” he said in a 2019 interview with his college, the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff. He was determined to be more than just a vocalist, adding, “I am an entertainer and I am determined that no one will entertain better than me.”
For 14 years, Braggs brought his unmistakable voice to the legendary soul band Tower of Power as their lead vocalist, later stepping into another iconic role as the lead singer of The Temptations. His classic R&B sound made him an instant favorite, perfectly complementing Tower of Power’s brassy funk and a perfect fit for the silky soul vocals of The Temptations.
Beyond these historic groups, he is a sought-after performer, touring nearly two hundred days a year, often with jazz and R&B greats like David Sanborn, Bob James, Marcus Miller, and the late George Duke. His versatility has also made him a go-to collaborator for projects with gospel luminaries such as The Winans.
More than a performer, he views music as a responsibility that carries the power to inspire, uplift, and communicate meaningful messages. Known as a true workhorse in the industry, Braggs has earned respect across the music world for his ability to reach audiences with both technical mastery and heartfelt expression.
Enjoy Larry Braggs to Middle C Jazz, on October 3rd.
