The Rhythms of Home: How UltimaNota Transforms Charlotte’s Latin Soul

Performance: Sunday, May 24th

May, 2026 –

Since forming in 2009, UltimaNota has established itself as a cornerstone of Charlotte’s constantly evolving Latin music landscape. Founded by guitarist Tony Arreaza, who originally moved from Venezuela with dreams of rock stardom, the group has spent over fifteen years bridging the gap between traditional tropical rhythms and contemporary global sounds. The band’s international roster includes seven musicians hailing from Venezuela, Mexico, El Salvador, and the Dominican Republic, a diverse lineup that naturally infuses their music with a wide array of cultural influences.

What began as a versatile cover band performing at weddings and restaurants has matured into a powerful creative force that writes, performs, and records original compositions that speak directly to the immigrant experience in the American South.

The sonic identity of UltimaNota is defined by what is called a blend of tropical rhythms with a modern twist. Their repertoire is a vibrant fusion that brings together traditional salsa, bachata, and merengue with elements of pop, funk, reggae, and blues. This eclectic approach allows them to cover icons like the Buena Vista Social Club or Bob Marley while adding their own characteristic flair, such as reimagining a song by The Police with a cumbia or bachata spin. Their music serves as a cultural bridge, often blending English and Spanish lyrics to reflect the “Spanglish” reality of many immigrant families whose lives span multiple borders and identities.

A major turning point for the group occurred during the pandemic, when they shifted their focus from live covers to recording original material. This era culminated in the 2022 release of their full-length album, “Soñando,” which translates to “Dreaming”. The project not only a collection of songs but was a community-focused initiative that featured various local Latinx artists and highlighted the immense diversity of the Charlotte music scene. One of the album’s most poignant tracks, “Mi Sueño,” acts as a tribute to the sacrifices made by immigrants. The accompanying music video received national recognition when it was nominated for Best Music Video at the 2022 Official Latino Film & Arts Festival in Palm Springs.

The band’s influence extends far beyond the recording studio, as they have become frequent collaborators with major local institutions. In early 2024, UltimaNota made history by performing alongside the Charlotte Symphony for its inaugural CSO Roadshow, a partnership that required custom symphonic arrangements of their original songs. They also maintain a strong presence in the city’s nightlife, where they continue to introduce new audiences to the depth and versatility of Latin music. Through these performances and their community advocacy, UltimaNota continues to play a vital role in fostering a flourishing and inclusive cultural community in Charlotte.

To celebrate their return, we are clearing space for a dance floor on Sunday, May 24th—a rare treat at our venue saved specifically for the infectious energy of UltimaNota—so grab your tickets and wear your salsa shoes.
