Spotlight: Urban & Smooth Jazz Saxophonist Marcus Click
FOLLOWING INSPIRATION
Performance: Sunday, June 22
Marcus Click performs as he has lived his life: with inspiration, the soul of someone with big dreams, and a commitment to pursuing excellence.
As a young adult growing up in a single-parent household in Louisville, Kentucky, Marcus had aspirations of becoming a pro football player. His path led him into the U.S. Navy, where he served honorably for over 13 years.
During these years, listening to and learning from artists like Grover Washington Jr., David Sanborn, and Kirk Whalum, his love for jazz grew. “I became truly inspired by a phone call from the late saxophonist, George Howard, a conversation I’ll never forget.” Surprisingly, Marcus would find himself with Rebbie Jackson (sister of the Jacksons; Janet Jackson) during her show in Las Vegas. He knew his life was being routed toward a musical journey.
Marcus’s presence in the contemporary jazz scene has grown from his home in Florida, nationally, and even internationally. He has headlined festivals across the U.S., including the 2016 Kentucky Derby City Jazz Festival and the 2019 Jacksonville Jazz Festival. In 2019, he was recognized with the AMG’s Instrumentalist of the Year Award.
Marcus’s music singles have climbed the charts. His single, “Brand New Day,” debuted at #1 for the most spins (1st week in rotation) for Billboard Smooth Jazz radio stations. “Together We Stand” charted on SmoothJazz.com’s Top 50 list. “Sound the Alarm” charted for seven consecutive weeks on the Smooth Jazz Top 100. Marcus’s songs continue to spin on Sirius XM Radio’s Watercolors and the Music Choice Network.
Marcus’s 2023 full album release, “Brand New Day,” continues this trajectory of success, with contributors including Mel Holder, Roger Ryan, Ben Parris, Jonathan Fritzen, and Bob Baldwin. This compilation of inspiring music carries the message of Marcus’s journey: wherever you are, each day is an opportunity to blossom and renew – “Brand New Day.”
