Tony Bennett

Tribute Performance: Sunday, August 9

July, 2026 –

Happy 100th to Tony Bennett, legendary artist, humanitarian, and American icon. A few reasons we admire and honor him.

Devoted Father & Mentor
He welcomed his daughter Antonia to the stage at age 4, nurturing her gift. After studying at Berklee College of Music, she officially became his primary opening act for decades, gracing stages like Radio City Music Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Standing Up for Civil Rights
During World War II, Bennett served as a U.S. Army infantryman in Europe, fighting on the front lines and helping liberate a concentration camp sub-camp. Later in 1965, he joined Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the historic march from Selma to Montgomery, performing for thousands despite security threats.

Unmatched Interpretation and Respect for Songcraft
“Tony Bennett is the best singer in the business. He moves me when I look at him. He moves me. He’s the singer who gets across what the composer has in mind, and probably a little more.” – Frank Sinatra, admirer and close friend.

A Fine Artist in His Own Right
Bennett was a lifelong visual artist who painted daily under his birth name, Anthony Benedetto. His works—ranging from portraits of jazz icons to landscapes—were exhibited worldwide, and three of his paintings hang in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution.

Championing Public Arts Education
To give back to the next generation of creative minds, Tony and wife Susan founded the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in 2001 in his hometown of Queens, a public high school training young artists across music, dance, theater, and fine arts.

Humility & Graciousness
Discovered by Bob Hope in 1949, he carried a signature warmth, humble gratitude, and deep reverence for his audience throughout his life. Comedian Bob Hope caught his show in Greenwich Village, invited him to join his tour, and insisted his real name was too long for marquee lights—simplifying Anthony Benedetto to Tony Bennett.

Musical Inclusivity
In 1951, Bennett recorded a pop-orchestral version of Hank Williams’ country hit “Cold, Cold Heart”. The song went straight to No. 1 on the Billboard charts, and played a massive role in introducing country music into mainstream pop culture.

Courage Through Music
Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2016, music remained deeply unlocked in his brain. He continued to rehearse, record, and tour for five years following his diagnosis without missing a lyric or a beat, culminating in two final sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall in 2021 before retiring at 95.

Unrivaled Seven-Decade Career
A 70-year career, 50 million records sold, 20 Grammy Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award and the Guinness World Record at 95 as the oldest person to release a new album (Love for Sale with Lady Gaga).

Antonia Bennett

“You know, when your 80-something-year-old father asked you to dance with him (on stage), you don’t say no.”

As we welcome Antonia Bennett back to Middle C Jazz to share a few songs for a one-of-a-kind Centennial musical celebration of her father Tony Bennett, we revisit this interview by Gwendolyn Glenn of WFAE from her last visit to Charlotte.
