Over the past generation, Charlotte has transformed from a quiet regional hub into one of the nation’s fastest-growing metropolitan areas, rapidly evolving into a major financial, cultural, and commercial center of the American South. Born and raised in the Queen City, saxophonist Mike Jones has absorbed the rich tapestry of that evolution, both its historical roots and the energy of an innovating city. When you listen to Mike Jones, you can hear the unique heartbeat of his Charlotte experience.

Mike Jones’s horn-driven sound bridges traditional jazz, modern R&B, and neo-soul. His high-profile performances and recordings include collaborations alongside major R&B, jazz, and gospel acts such as Kirk Whalum, Angie Stone, Cameo, John P. Kee, Ruben Studdard, Ben Tankard, and Tim Bowman.

His signature musicality merges classic jazz improvisation with contemporary soul sensibilities. Through his saxophone, Jones connects us to the ebb and flow of the human experience—capturing the breathless pauses and the sudden accelerations of everyday life. This narrative approach shines in his work with the acclaimed ensemble Groove Centric, alongside peers Donnie Boynton, Joel Powell, and Brien Andrews, on albums Crossing Bridges and Stopped Time.

Beyond the technical mastery and expressive artistry of his music, Jones has applied his skill in film and photography to the role of cultural documentarian. He conceived and directed “Home Is Where the Harte Is,” an Emmy-nominated short film and jersey initiative with the Charlotte Hornets. His vision celebrated Charlotte’s Black excellence by weaving the names of historically Black neighborhoods—like Brooklyn Village and Beatties Ford—directly into the team’s visual identity to honor the city’s complex history.
