Born in Richmond, Virginia, Robbie Cunningham was immersed early in a rich environment of jazz, R&B, classical arrangements, and gospel. His musical education began on the drums within the supportive confines of his local church. This percussive baseline proved foundational, instilling a deep rhythmic agility and scatting talent that seamlessly informed his transition to lead vocalist, while embedding a spiritual gravitas that later led him to become a licensed minister.

Moving to the front of the stage, Cunningham signed with Philadelphia-based Alpha International under the pseudonym Robbie Mychals. The era yielded Billboard R&B chart success and introduced his smooth, velvet vocal textures to a national audience.

Navigating the music business, he collaborated with industry powerhouses, including smooth jazz artist Bob Baldwin and soul icon Patti LaBelle. These studio and stage partnerships deepened his production acumen, allowing him to seamlessly bridge gospel, hard-hitting R&B, and contemporary jazz.

Seeking creative autonomy, Cunningham founded Zoé Music Group to release what he calls “Life Music”— his signature blend of jazz syncopation, modern grooves, and faith-driven messaging. His work extended into television and film composition, earning placements on MTV, CBS, and Ion, alongside a Telly Award for his production work on the documentary Seed. He also explores instrumental electronic soundscapes under the moniker JazzimatronX.

Cunningham’s career and perspective are deeply informed by personal resilience as a cancer survivor. That intensity translates directly to the stage, whether performing at historic venues or leading his popular revue, “Breakin’ Away: A Tribute to the Soulful Side of Jazz & R&B,” where his drum-rooted percussive vocal phrasing shines as he reinterprets masters like Al Jarreau, Donny Hathaway, and Stevie Wonder. With collaborative projects such as Songs Nana Used to Sing and dynamic releases alongside artist Bee Boy$oul, Cunningham balances a prolific recording schedule with vibrant live shows.
