The relaxing trade winds of Barbados carry a rhythmic architecture that shapes the soul long before a musician ever presses a key. For Elan Trotman, growing up in this tropical paradise meant a childhood saturated in the syncopated basslines of reggae and the celebratory brass of calypso. He began his musical voyage at age seven on the piano before discovering his true calling at twelve, when his fingers first wrapped around a saxophone.

Trotman fell under the guidance and mentorship of local saxophone legend Arturo Tappin, who had studied at the Berklee College of Music and returned to the island carrying a profound understanding of American jazz. Trotman’s musical universe expanded, absorbing the monumental influences of Grover Washington Jr. and Kirk Whalum. In 1998, Trotman retraced his mentor’s footsteps, migrating from sun-drenched Barbados to crisp New England to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music.

Immersion into the Boston jazz scene forced him to synthesize his Caribbean roots with traditional bebop, yielding an emotive, uniquely vocal-like playing style. Upon graduating, Trotman balanced a burgeoning nightly career as a composer with a decade spent working diligently as an educator within the Boston Public Schools.

That dedication paid off as Trotman transitioned into a full-time global performer. A four-time Billboard-topping artist, he has earned multiple Jazz Artist of the Year trophies from both the New England Urban Music Awards and the Barbados Music Awards. His signature stage presence has made him a sought-after collaborator, sharing world stages and studios with icons like Michael McDonald, Roberta Flack, Jonathan Butler, and Marcus Miller.

True to his roots, Trotman remains committed to paying his success forward. Through his Never Lose Your Drive Foundation, he funds vital music education programs and mentorship for young musicians in both Boston and Barbados. Today, things have come completely full circle: when he is not touring the globe, he serves as an Associate Professor at his alma mater, Berklee, mentoring the next generation of global instrumentalists and helping them find their own island rhythm.
