For over five decades, Curtis Salgado has served as a blues icon, celebrated by NPR for his powerhouse vocals and praised by Billboard for weaving together hard-nosed blues, nuanced R&B, and funky grooves.

His journey began in Eugene, Oregon, where he absorbed his parents’ classic 78 RPM records, self-taught the harmonica, and refined his vocal style. By his early twenties, Salgado was a Pacific Northwest staple, co-leading The Robert Cray Band from 1976 to 1982 and sharing stages with titans like Muddy Waters and Albert Collins. He later fronted the horn-heavy ensemble Roomful of Blues and served a stint as lead vocalist for Santana.

Beyond his performance resume, Salgado holds a unique place in pop culture history through his 1977 encounter with actor John Belushi, who was in Oregon filming Animal House. Transfixed by Salgado’s swagger and musical knowledge, Belushi took a crash course from him in classic blues and R&B masters. This informal mentorship directly inspired Belushi to create his iconic “Joliet” Jake Blues alter ego and launch The Blues Brothers, who explicitly dedicated their multi-platinum debut album, Briefcase Full of Blues, to Salgado.

Salgado launched his solo career in 1991 with Curtis Salgado & The Stilettos, immediately winning Blues Music Awards for Soul Blues Album and Soul Blues Artist of the Year. His prolific discography includes acclaimed releases like The Beautiful Lowdown (2016), the acoustic Rough Cut (2018), and the triumphant Damage Control (2021).

What makes his artistic peaks so extraordinary is his resilience. Salgado is a celebrated health survivor, having successfully overcome liver cancer (requiring a liver transplant in 2006), lung cancer, and quadruple bypass surgery—routinely channeling his survival back into his craft.

To date, Salgado has earned 14 Blues Music Awards, including the prestigious B.B. King Entertainer of the Year award. As he continues to tour the globe and work on his upcoming memoir, Curtis Salgado remains a master showman, moving audiences with authentic American music.
