In our big/little city of Charlotte, bassist, vocalist and composer Willie Walker fills those shoes.

Walker’s career reads like a map of American groove. He has accumulated a dizzying resume of collaborations, performing alongside trumpet titan Clark Terry, jazz icon Najee, and Dick Smith of Earth, Wind and Fire fame. His versatility extends from staff bassist for Sound Lab Studio to touring with beach music legends General Johnson and the Chairmen of the Board, and serving as an orchestral arranger at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. This diverse pedigree infuses his sound with a unique hybrid of academic precision and spiritual, foot-stomping energy.

For more than a decade, Walker has steered his premier sextet, Conversation Piece, through a mix of jazz fusion, deep soul, and contemporary smooth jazz. The band features stellar local heavyweights Carl Ratliff, Darryl Payton, Derek McCoy, Charlton Taylor, and Chris Whitley. Together, they build a sound that feels simultaneously tight and dangerously spontaneous. In a landscape where many modern jazz ensembles favor mathematical complexity, Conversation Piece prioritizes the groove, demonstrating a keen understanding that jazz, at its core, is a social art form.

This philosophy is fully realized in studio and live albums like Inside My Mind, L.A. Bop, and Live at 831. Tracks transition seamlessly from breezy smooth jazz melodies to the gritty rhythms of 1970s jazz fusion.
