Community Spotlight: Tim Scott Jr.
MUSIC ADVOCATE
Performance: Sunday, September 15
Tim Scott Jr.has made significant contributions to Charlotte’s contemporary cultural landscape, operating as a percussionist, music director, and visionary event producer.
Raised in a gospel music family and honed at Charlotte’s Northwest School of the Arts, Scott’s talent developed alongside regional virtuosos like Harvey Cummings and Ashlin Parker. His early career touring with the Grammy-nominated collective The Foreign Exchange established a foundation that led to collaborations with icons like Robert Glasper and Fantasia.
In 2013, Scott expanded into production and advocacy, co-founding Stand Out Saints alongside his wife, Kenya, to manage and protect independent artists. As Event Production Coordinator for Charlotte Center City Partners, he shapes major cultural milestones, including Charlotte SHOUT!, the Black Notes Project, and the seasonal Soulful Noel celebration.
A frequent contributor to Middle C Jazz, Scott is currently bringing classics to life through his “On The Record” performance series, which recreates genre-defining jazz albums live from front to back using Charlotte’s next generation of talent.
“I want people to get the nostalgia of hearing music they already love, while also experiencing it in a completely new way,” Scott explains. “Jazz has never been a music that was meant to be frozen in time. The musicians who made these records were constantly evolving, taking chances and responding to the world around them. The best way we can honor that legacy is to approach the music with that same spirit.”
By pairing legendary jazz history with the region’s rising stars, Scott continues to build musical moments of exceptional meaning and cultural equity for the Charlotte community.
Enjoy a little modern history with the next On the Record performance, with the music of Charlie Parker, Wednesday. September 15th.
