Spotlight on Pianist Bob Baldwin

“NEWURBANJAZZ” HITMAKER

Performance: Friday, June 12

May, 2026 –

Bob Baldwin’s father, Robert Baldwin, Sr., was an accomplished jazz pianist and upright bassist whose career included working alongside Keter Betts, Ella Fitzgerald’s main bassist, and Art Davis, the final bassist for the legendary John Coltrane. Little Bobby soaked it all in at his father’s jam sessions, and those early experiences planted the seeds of what would become a remarkable career spanning more than four decades.

Bob Baldwin is a contemporary jazz pianist known for his smooth sound and his gift for reinventing modern pop and R&B tunes. His style blends the elegance of traditional jazz piano with the warmth of soul, funk, and R&B influences, creating what he calls “NewUrbanJazz”, a signature sound that feels both sophisticated and deeply accessible. He has proven to be one of the most versatile and inventive chameleons of contemporary jazz, whether working on his own projects or collaborating with others. His willingness to move across genres without losing his artistic identity is what sets him apart in a crowded field.

In 1988, Roberta Flack selected him as the Sony Innovators Award winner in a highly publicized new-artist competition, introducing him to music mogul Sylvia Rhone and landing him his first deal with Atlantic Jazz. From there, his career took off in remarkable directions. He has collaborated with jazz and pop luminaries such as George Benson, Grover Washington Jr., Will Downing, and Gerald Albright, and his recordings have earned him a reputation as one of smooth jazz’s most dependable hitmakers. His 2013 album Twenty hit number three on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart, a milestone that affirmed his staying power in the industry.

Bob Baldwin is a true international jazz artist, having recorded on six different continents since the beginning of his career, and as of 2024, he has released 37 studio discs. Beyond performing and producing, he hosts The NewUrbanJazz Lounge, a weekly radio program he has been running since 2008. His album The Stay at Home Series, Vol. 1 was recognized as the best contemporary jazz album at the inaugural Jazz Music Awards in 2022, a fitting honor for an artist who has spent a lifetime elevating the genre. For listeners new to jazz or longtime fans alike, Bob Baldwin’s music is an open door, elegant, soulful, and always worth your time.

Friday, June 12th, don’t miss a full night of hits, including his latest 2026 project.
